The Darcy Elaine Richie Teacher Courage Award honors Darcy E. Richie, a former classroom teacher, principal, professor, and Generation Citizen’s former Chief Officer of Program and Impact, who passed away in April 2022.

This $10,000 award created in her honor celebrates teachers of civics, U.S. government, or history who embody Darcy’s courage and excellence in equity-rooted civic education.

In June 2023, Generation Citizen announced Emmanuel Ramos, a distinguished teacher at Central Falls High School in Central Falls, RI, as the recipient of the inaugural Darcy Elaine Richie Teacher Courage Award. This esteemed accolade recognizes Emmanuel for his work promoting civic life among students, empowering students with real decision-making power in school, and beginning the work of dismantling systemic racism.
